The Return of Boho-Chic! The Style Has Been Revamped!

As you may have noticed, boho always comes back. That’s why I consider it more of a style than a trend—it always returns refreshed, with a more modern twist that aligns with the era. In this post, I'll tell you how boho-chic originated, what the revamped boho-chic looks like, boho-chic icons, and how to adapt this style/trend into your daily life without losing your authenticity!

how did it start?

Surprisingly, boho didn’t originate in the 2000s. The first appearance of this style was when the Bohemians (nomads native to Bohemia) arrived in France. They brought their fun way of life and flowing garments that gave off a boho vibe. Over time, their style began to unconsciously influence people, who started adopting elements of it bit by bit. This influence grew until the 1920s when the style truly took off—thanks to the Roaring Twenties. These were the years of wild celebrations, dancing, and fun. Adopting their way of life and style fit the era perfectly, especially the flowing fabrics that complemented the movements of dance.

In the 1960s, Karl Lagerfeld took over as the creative director of Chloé, and the brand's founder, Gaby Aghion, encouraged him to delve into the past and bring a sense of nostalgia to Chloé. This led Karl to design clothing with a more boho style, which revolutionized the brand. To this day, Chloé remains known for its boho-inspired aesthetic—back then referred to as the Bohemian Style. In the 2000s, this style became known as "boho" or "hipster" and was widely embraced, particularly for festivals like Coachella. It was characterized by denim shorts, cowboy boots, fringes, braided headbands, coin belts, flowing fabrics, prints, kimonos, flowers, and more.

revamped boho-chic

Dyeing clothes in vibrant colors used to be very expensive, and back in the days of the Bohemians, they wore garments in more subdued, earthy tones since they didn’t have much money. In modern times, we find ourselves in a similar situation, but now with a focus on sustainability. This is why the boho style fits perfectly today, blending its earthy roots with a more conscious, eco-friendly approach.

However, the boho style has changed significantly since the 2000s. Today, boho-chic has been revamped and is now defined by a more minimalist approach, featuring wide-leg pants, sheer fabrics, lace, shimmer, blush tones, voluminous clothing (like skirts and sleeves), crochet, embroidery, and much more. The 2024 Chloé runway showcased many of these updated elements, heavily influencing the revival of this "trend."

boho-chic icons

In the 2000s especially, there were many icons who embraced the boho style. Some of these include: Sienna Miller; Janis Joplin; Vanessa Hudgens; Alessandra Ambrósio; Paris Hilton and The Olsen Twins

These celebrities had a major influence at the time and still incorporate elements of the boho-chic style into their looks today—especially the Olsen Twins, who have embraced this style as part of their lifestyle! In addition to these famous figures, certain iconic bags also defined that era, such as the Motorcycle Bag by Balenciaga and the Paddington Bag by Chloé.

how to wear it daily without losing your authenticity

Sometimes we want to follow a trend but still keep our authenticity and fit it into our personal style. Well, it’s possible, and I’m here to share some tips! You can wear puffed sleeves, boho belts with coins, linen palazzo skirts, flared pants, flowy clothes, floral prints, lace details, white or beige dresses, crochet pieces, or denim shorts or short dresses paired with cowboy boots. These boots will add a laid-back vibe to your look, especially if you don’t want to come across as overly sexy with a tight dress and heels—they’re super versatile and go with everything!

The boho style has evolved significantly over the years but has maintained its free-spirited and authentic essence. Combine classic elements with current trends and always add your personal touch to create a unique look that stays true to your personality.
